Lessons learned from moving? Just because you think something is obvious and you have explained it to those moving in detail doesn't mean they understand.

In a previous employer, I was helping relocate some reference binders. They had a whole wall of them and scanning wasn't an option at that point. When someone needed to check a reference they went to the binder, copied or noted the info they needed and put it back. I measured carefully and loaded the moving cart with the binders in order and carefully shrink wrapped the whole collection. The movers were internal facility guys. They were specifically and repeatedly instructed to take the cart to a certain person who would unload the binders in order.

They took the cart to the right area, but couldn't find the person they needed(she was in the bathroom). They decided they still needed the cart for another purpose, so they dumped them all into a 3 foot high pile on the floor and went on their way with their beloved cart. They never actually called or spoke to anyone when and after they dumped them. The person they were delivering the binders to could have unloaded them in 20 minutes. It took her 4 hours to sort them out.

The lesson - you might save money with internal personal but if they aren't records personnel who understand order, organization, sequence you better watch out. An experienced external records moving vendor wouldn't have done something so impulsive and stupid.
