Hi Lisa,
One of the key pieces here is executive level support for the organization's RIM Program and the expectation that staff following the Program's guidance.
In discussions with staff, I tend to let them know that retention periods have been thoroughly researched with a variety of stakeholders, including the office of record, and our research takes into account any legal/regulatory, operational, and historical requirements that may impact the retention of these records.
I also note that when records are eligible for destruction that only those that are required for litigation, audit or open public records request are to be excluded from the destruction cycle.
Hope this helps!
Warmly,
jessica

Subject: Staff training
Greetings,
I am putting together a PPT for training staff about RM and I am hoping you can help me on the wording of something in regards to the retention schedule.
I am trying to say that because the destruction/transfer, etc. dates are stated on the retention schedule, it releases you from any further obligation to keep them. I think I am on the right track with this, I just wanted to craft the wording a bit. I think a bit of legalese would be helpful to make that point that following the retention schedule is important.
Any other suggestions would be appreciated as well. This is the first of the staff trainings at my organization, I want to make sure I hit all the important points without it becoming information overload.
Thanks in advance.
Lisa
