I'm also in a "one person department."
There's no official policy for me to do this sort of succession planning, but I fully intend to do it anyway. I've done too much to get the RM programme here up and running to let it languish while the next person get up to speed.
I always keep on top of my job description, I've already got procedures in place for various different tasks that I do (intake of records, destruction, retrieving files, etc.), but I will, in the near future, also sit down and write some sort of overview of how I've set stuff up, who the main contacts are, where we are with digitization, who the supporters and critics are, and so on. This is the sort of thing I wish I had had when I started here.

Are you responsible (in whole or in part) in planning for your own successor? How are you/would you go about doing this? This plan may not go to the level of saying “Joe Smith” will be the next Records Manager, but more along the lines of detailed requirements for your particular job.
