Also, speaking as both an employee and a former consultant, it always
amazes me how much policy impacts this discussion, sometimes to the point
of absurdity. I've done many trips where renting a car would have been
significantly cheaper than, say, taxi, even including parking and gas, but
"our policy is not to reimburse rental cars" ended up costing more. Same
thing with your preferred hotel vs. my frequent stay brand....

I'm with Patrick though regarding airlines: what few perks you get at the
lowest status tier are still better than not. This explains why I've been a
grudgingly loyal fan of United all these years. :P

For conferences I do try to stay at the conference hotel, even though it is
often significantly more expensive, not just in room rate but in additional
charges for internet and breakfast. But the value of being right there for
the events and networking is more important to me up to a pretty stiff
premium.
