The tour will consist of two parts, the main library and the Rare Book
department. Chartered in 1891 and opened in 1894 the Free Library is the
largest lending institution of orchestral material in the world ( The
Fleisher Collection) which consists of sheet music dating back to as early
as 1730. In the rare book department see the Cuneiform tablets collection
which is the oldest form of “books”. The collection boasts over 2,800 clay
tablets dating from 3,000 B.C. to 300 B.C. Additionally see other rare
letters, manuscripts and books of Charles Dickens, Edgar Allen Poe, George
Bernard Shaw, etc. Truly a walk back in time.

The Free Library records method is a work in progress using electronic,
paper, physical approximation and legacy knowledge within its Records
Information Management System. Sound familiar?

Afterwards feel free to join us for complimentary appetizers and a cash bar at:

McCrossens Tavern
529 North 20th Street
Philadelphia, PA.
