I agree with Steve Whitaker's approach here - if you have a retention
schedule, and you follow it consistently, why would you create records to
document destruction of records? Or even keep metadata relating to same?
Seems like it opens up a door for someone who doesn't understand records
management to question your disposition decisions. I know I'm in the
minority in this thread. I also expect/hope/wonder whether everyone doing
em with physical records is doing so consistently with electronic records
as well...and if you're not keeping your certificates of destruction
permanently, at some point don't you have to create certificates of
destruction to document destruction of your certificates of destruction?
If I did have to deal with certificates of destruction I'd go for as short
a period of time as possible - certainly not permanent.
