Last month, the Computing Community Consortium, in collaboration with the National Coordination Office (NCO) for Networking and Information Technology Research and Development (NITRD) Program ( http://www.nitrd.gov/ ), sponsored a symposium ( http://www.cra.org/ccc/nitrdsymposium.php ) in Washington, DC. The purpose of the symposium was to reflect on what the NITRD Program has accomplished over the past 20 years.

The NITRD Program is the Nation's primary source of Federally funded revolutionary breakthroughs in advanced information technologies such as computing, networking, and software. The NITRD Program stems from the High-Performance Computing (HPC) Act of 1991 (Public Law 102-194) as amended by the Next Generation Internet Research Act of 1998 (Public Law 105-305). These laws authorize Federal agencies to set goals, prioritize their investments, and coordinate their activities in networking and information technology research and development.

Former Vice President Al Gore, who spearheaded the High-Performance Computing Act of 1991, was the keynote speaker at the symposium.

The videos and slides from the presentations are now available online here:

The National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) has been involved with the NITRD Program for many years. From 2004 through 2006 NARA was a "participating" agency. From 2006 forward NARA has been a "member" agency.

One of our Applied Research ( https://www.facebook.com/NARACAST ) Partners, Dr. Kenton McHenry ( https://picasaweb.google.com/108563730144513931521/NITRDFebruary162012?authkey=Gv1sRgCNm-qLe9jeaiYQ#5710956732550246434 ), gave an invited poster presentation at the Impact of NITRD Symposium. His topic was his research for NARA in searching digital images of handwritten documents. The title of his poster was, Searching Raw Handwritten Data - The 1930 and 1940 Census. Dr. McHenry is developing tools that could allow for some limited search capabilities for the 1940 Census before Ancestry, Family Search, etc complete their indexes of the records. You can find a copy of his poster here:
