Hi Everyone,

For those of you interested in taking University Courses on social media,
metadata and legal issues with RIM, please consider the University of Dundee
in Scotland's online courses.  You can also pursue a full online Masters
Degree.

CAIS offers short courses for continuing professional education,
Postgraduate certificates, Masters degrees, opportunities for doctoral
research and bespoke training solutions for partners.

 

Programmes offered by supported online distance learning include:

.       MSc Records Management and Digital Preservation (International
pathway available)

.       MSc Records Management and Information Rights

A small number of places are available for study in May 2012 on three of the
short online courses offered by the Centre for Archive and Information
Studies (CAIS) at the University of Dundee:

 

.       Web 2.0 for Information Professionals (9 weeks)

.       Wider Legal Frameworks (9 weeks)

.       Metadata and Information Taxonomies (15 weeks)

 

The deadline for applications is 23 March. Courses begin 14 May. Application

CAIS courses are taught by subject experts from the UK, USA, Canada and
Australia and are provided in a fully supported online learning environment.

 

The courses are ideal for anyone seeking to acquire or refresh knowledge in
these rapidly evolving areas of professional practice.

 

All short courses and Masters degrees offered by CAIS are accredited by the
Archives and Records Association, UK and Ireland, and by Records and
Information Management Professionals Australasia. The CAIS teamwas 'highly
commended' by the Information and Records Management Society in their awards

This course examines

 

.       The nature of Web 2.0, the tools and the opportunities and risks for
recordkeepers

.       The implications of social media for information policies (including
privacy and copyright)

.       Web 2.0, the nature of the record in social computing and appraisal

.       Digital preservation, access and Web 2.0

.       Participatory culture and changing attitudes to information

.       The role of the recordkeeper in a Web 2.0 world

 

Wider Legal Frameworks (9 weeks)

 

This course examines

 

.       The legal structures that impact upon the work of information
professionals over and above the Data Protection and Freedom of Information
Acts including:

o   Access to Health Records Act 1990

o   Re-Use of Public Sector Information Regulations 2005

o   human rights and the right to a private life

o   Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act 2000

o   Telecommunications (Lawful Business Practices) (Interception of
Communications) Regulations 2000

o   Privacy and Electronic Communications (EC Directive) Regulations 2003

o   Official Secrets Act 1989

o   Prescription and Limitation Acts.

 

Metadata and Information Taxonomies (15 weeks)

 

This course examines

 

.       Metadata standards 

.       The main metadata concepts 

.       The use of metadata for the management and retrieval of records and
archive collections

.       Identity, discovery and resource description

.       The main types of taxonomy available 

.       How classification systems apply to records and archival collections

.       Hierarchical and faceted classification 

.       Controlled vocabularies 

.       Ontologies and folksonomies
