LOBs like SharePoint because IT leaves them in charge of setting up their
own site provisioning, security, user administration, records management
and taxonomies. But Records Managers have recognized that SP makes it next
to impossible to achieve visibility, business control, corporate security,
business process and taxonomies across SP sites. Corporate Management,
Finance, Legal, Records, Governance, Compliance and IT are challenged with
implementing and enforcing corporate requirements for accessing & managing
content assets and mitigating business risks.

80% of the functionality at 20% of the price has always proven a
convincing sales tactic for Microsoft. The reality is that SP does less
than what a customer needs for Document Management. One should start with
an ECM provider's direct connect MS Office integration that meets a
significant percentage of needs otherwise not addressed by SP, which is
insufficient for DM. For example: SP does not support the critical
capabilities that are key to any DM implementation, including rendering
and managing related Word, PDF, and scanned wet-signature versions of a
document through its lifecycle.

Subject: Cost Of Making SharePoint Work For RIM
Sent by: Records Management Program <[log in to unmask]>

Hello everyone,

SharePoint 2010 is going to be deployed in our organization. Period. End
of
Story. Whether we use its RIM capabilities or not, its collaboration
capabilities
are too big of a driver and are anticipated to help the Company streamline

many business processes.

Now for my question - In your experience, is it a better investment to
tweak
SharePoint to handle our wish list (managing all content – physical,
electronic
(emails), eDiscovery, etc.) or go with a different vendor (insert any name

here) who may cost more upfront, but in the long run might cost less and
better aligns with our objectives. SharePoint seems like a more cost
effective
way to reach our objectives. I guess I’m just worried about scope creep
and
ultimately not being able to manage most, if not all of our content
through one
platform…Maybe this isn’t possible and I should have opened a window after

painting last night!

Also, is anyone currently managing the majority of their information
through
SharePoint (especially physical records and emails)? If so, I would love
to hear
your story on or offline.

Thanks in advance for your time.
