Gary --
I suggest you consider a gently-used mainstream netbook that runs Windows and/or Ubuntu Linux. I bet you have a friend or friend of a friend itching to unload one and move to more current technology.
For example, you would be better off with my three-year old Toshiba NB305 than with what caught your eye -- screen large enough (10-inch) to work with, small enough to travel with and use enroute, excellent connectivity, mainstream support. And this is not a plug to sell my Toshiba, which has served me well traveling on business and personal trips, and as backup to home desktop. I had no problem VPNing back to the County and RDPing to my work desktop. I could plug right into conference projectors and present PowerPoints. I had no problem tweaking my presentations in the hotel room. These netbooks cost only $350 or so new, so should be available out there for much less now. The marginally higher cost would quickly pay back with less hassle in making them work well. Make sure to check the keyboard feel, if you really intend to write -- that's why I chose the Toshiba model I did.
