How about not using Dells? This post indicates its not the first Dell
laptop fire - there's clearly something wrong with them, and until
they fix the problem it seems sensible to just avoid them. I do, but
for other reasons - the IT people I know detest Dells virulently., and
my last two Dell laptops suddenly fried on me.

Then again, if its a general lithium battery problem - that's more
serious and needs investigation. A cooling mat perhaps? My HP laptop
gets *very* hot, and its had heat-shutdown more than once before I got
the cooling mat.

Or this could be just a case of a computer that was handled roughly over time and the battery could have been damaged.  TSA Agents are very considerate when they handle your laptops, iPads and such.
