Undoubtedly. I would be willing to bet that people nicking books from
the library was every bit as much a problem then as now; and books being
so much more expensive in those days, the severity of the problem and
urgency for a solution would have been much greater than now. So if they
didn't start out that way, they would certainly have figured out pretty
quickly that they needed them, as their collection slowly melted away.
The real question is, did they have late fees? And amnesty days? And
if they didn't, did Archimedes and Pythagoras and the other great
intellects of the day have their own personal libraries full of books
nicked from the great public libraries, or just never returned because
they ddn't want to pay the late fee?
