For Irene Eklund who asked for recommendations on records retention and destruction... To be up front, I work for Iron Mountain, a records and information management company. Irene, your question makes me think of a couple of resources that might be helpful:
1) a blog written by Carolyn Casey, our senior manager of the legal vertical, that talks about putting such policies in place. Here's a link to that blog -- http://blog.ironmountain.com/2011/records-management-and-storage/what%e2%80%99s-that-monkey-sitting-on-your-back/

2) Information management professionals from 20 top law firms got together earlier this year for a three-day working symposium to outline an IG framework for law firms. Here is a link to the report from that symposium entitled "A Proposed Law Firm Information Governance Framework": http://bit.ly/NA7e4Y

I hope you'll find this helpful.

Best,
Kelly Murray
