Pilar said "I used to work for Boeing -- and they have their feet firmly planted in the "aviation authority" swamp (if I'm correctly understanding your question)."

Pilar, based on ignorance, my a-priori idea of an "aviation authority" (swamp-like or otherwise) was limited to quasi-governmental organisations operating airports and related facilities (such as the Greater Orlando Aviation Authority), hence my question to Alice.

I recognise the specific issue you have in mind: one of the illustrations I use when speaking of long-term records is Boeing's B-52 bombers (last 'H' model came off the production line in October 1962), but the DC-3 is also a great example. Thank you for reminding me of it!
