When some time ago I ran a records center operation (10,000 plus cartons) and we were instituting a bar-coding and tracking system, we used a shelf numbering system that was based on a scheme something like:

Room | Aisle or Row | Rack | Shelf

Although each shelf had a forward and rear area and about three boxes across we did not differentiate at that level.
