Simple is best. Remember that whatever level of detail you decide on will be the level of detail that you will have to support, regardless of possible staff cuts or budget cuts that may occur from time to time.  Also remember that perfection is the enemy of progress.  Good enough is often good enough, and certainly cheaper and less labor intensive.  

In this instance is it really valuable to know that a box in the front or back, or is it good enough to know it is either in the front or back?  I'd say knowing it is in either position is good enough, since once you get to that location you can easily determine it's exact position, and you likely would appreciate having the most used box in the front anyway.
