Bill,
Thanks for your comments. I think the point of this ListServ is to provide
options and I think that is exactly what the responses to Anna have done -
provided a variety of options for Anna to consider. I did not say my
solution was superior, but I think based on the information Anna included,
"We are trying to be mindful that our Records Center may grow over the
coming years and want to develop a system that is expandable. We also want
to avoid over-complicating things as what might be necessary for a
government agency or fortune 500 company may not be necessary for us." my
best solution to Anna is a simple one.

My response was specifically to Anna who is handling a small in-house box
storage system. My personal experience as a RIM practitioner includes
managing small in-house box storage areas. You are absolutely right that my
suggestion is not the same as a commercial records center - lots of
differences between the two. My experience with small in-house box storage
areas is that it is not unusual for the storage space to be reallocated and
the boxes moved to another (sometimes less desirable) space that may not
allow the same aisle configuration; so, I think it is "best" in this case
to keep it simple. The key is to make it flexible and easy to find the
assigned location and box with or without any technology.

My response to Anna in no way implies that other suggestions are inferior.
But a variety of options will help Anna determine what works best for her.
Records Management is an art and the details will change based on the
specific situation.
