I should have mentioned that we do give client responders a time limit to respond. Glad Julie caught that. We use two weeks. That way they have a reasonable time to respond, but it is not so long that our correspondence will get lost in a pile or forgotten.  We also follow up when that expires with another letter before we move to destruction.  It is very important to also include an email address for them to respond to. Once we did that we got a lot more responses with our first letter, than just using a pre-paid envelop to our street address, and the response were much faster.

In New York State and DC the client file is the property of the client, not the attorney, so we do not notify attorneys that have left the firm, but you need to research that for your state, and weigh the issues, before proceeding.

I'm a little uncomfortable with a retention period for immigration, estate, probate, and real estate files lasting only 7 years, but you didn't ask us to respond to that, so I won't at this time.
