I had a conversation with a person in the ARMA leadership during the Chicago conference. I'm not sure the point that was made to me during that conversation has been raised here - or at least I don't remember seeing it raised here - so here is what I can share. (Any other person more in the know than me, which would be pretty much anyone in the ARMA leadership, feel free to fill in or correct, if needed).

The scope of the Generally Accepted Recordkeeping Principles started off modestly with areas of activity that did not overlap other organizations' areas of involvement. Because it caught on so quickly and expanded so rapidly, there is now overlap among the activity areas of other organizations. This creates confusion if the acronym continues to be used. The other organization in question acted to protect their brand which had already been established in these operating areas.

ARMA, then, is a victim of its own success where the Generally Accepted Recordkeeping Principles are concerned, and that is a very good problem to have. The adjustments that must be made at this juncture should take nothing away from the success and recognition that the profession enjoys as a direct result of this initiative. Perhaps there is a better label - I think that question is not so important in the grand scheme of things. What is much more important is proliferation and acceptance of these principles throughout the various enterprises that create and manage records and information. Focusing on that is very important; the principles are a key tool toward gaining that professional and organizational recognition.

Best wishes,

Jim
