Preserving Afghanistan’s heritage: Paper work | The Economist

IN A country torn apart by war, an unequalled archive aims to ensure that
the lessons of recent history are shared and not lost. The Afghanistan
Centre at Kabul University is moving into its own premises next month,
giving access to an unparalleled trove of documents from the past three
turbulent decades.

The centre is home to 70,000 documents, ranging from aid-agency reports to
mujahideen posters and Taliban newspapers. They were collected by an
85-year-old American, Nancy Hatch Dupree, who has devoted decades to
gathering everything written on or in the country. “Anything that says
Afghanistan on it, we have decided to take,” she says.
