Hi Mary, and thanks so much for your response. I agree with everything you said, and like to think that we are focused on our goals. You're right in that it is not as much about "new-fangled" (my term) tools and methods as it is about the user experience, and ensuring that our users can continue to access and manage their records.

One of the things that I didn't say in that initial post that I did say to those who contacted me off-list and wanted to know more about our email management program (EMP), is that in developing that EMP, if the user had a folder structure that they liked and therefore was resistant to change, we tried to integrate that user's current system into our Managed Folder structure. This was a major selling point for us as it meant that the user--with a couple of changes in their processing, could continue to use a [slightly modified] system that worked for them. It also alleviated the concern that users would have to start all over again from scratch with their email, in building a new and different structure.

Our goal now is to try and mimic what we did with the EMP in Outlook, into SP2010. Where possible, we want to integrate the user's current way of doing things in SP2010, into the big bucket approach. If we can apply retention, and if users can access and manage their email according to company policies (via the EMP's big bucket approach) in Outlook, then it seems to me that it ought to be doable in SP2010 under that same kind of approach. Granted that we will need to adjust the buckets given that there are many more records in SP that don't exist in an email format, so we'll likely end up with more than the 7 buckets we currently use in the EMP now. It'll also be more of a challenge because of the various ways in which users are using SP2010. However, couple this along with our new SP governance plan that we will be implementing this year in order to "reign in the cats," then we may be on to something.

I like your idea of making up a list of questions to be asked/answered, with regard to our program goals. As I sated before, our first RM Advisory Team meeting is less than 2 weeks away, so this is the ideal time to do something like this in kicking off the new year.

Again, many thanks to you and others who have responded to my post both on and off-list, I really appreciate the input and feedback. All of the comments and responses I've received have been very helpful to us as we continue to look at ways to move forward in managing our electronic records.

Thanks again.
Earl
