I would suggest one added caveat.  Ownership of the content is also determined by jurisdiction.  In the US, it is pretty well established that business related information belongs to the employer.  However, there have been some recent rulings regarding non-business communications that vest ownership with the employee.

If you are doing business in the EU, the law of the land is that email communications are owned by the employee.  Most jurisdictions do allow for employees to stipulate that business related emails are company property, France being a notable exception.
