Hi, Gordy and all my other dear colleagues,

<< What do you think of XML as a stable format for records? How long do you think future software will be able to read XML documents created today?>>

XML is not just a markup language, it is also a hierarchical database system. It is very powerful because it is so flexible, but that flexibility requires a profound understanding of how the XML was formatted and rendered. In other words, every single XML document can conceivably have completely different definitions for each section, making the preservation of data definitions, etc. very important as is the rendering engine. It is, then, no better for preservation than any other format because the metadata and application you need to read the document must still exist.

Best wishes,
Carol
