Some good information in here not only for the perspective of employers and
actions they need to consider for how they manage EHR/EMR data, but also
some EXCELLENT suggestions about taking afresh look at any Business
Associates agreements you may have in place and the need for updating them.

And here's something else to think about... there were some questions about
the use of Commercial Storage Service Providers for managing your medical
case files and other such materials. There were also some comments about
how safe these arrangements may be, but do any of you have information
copied, scanned/imaged, faxed to you by these service providers?

Do you know whether the devices they use to perform these functions STORE
IMAGES of the items they process (like most devices do these days) and if
those images remain in the memory of the machines after they are processed
or transmitted? And how long they remain there? And who may be able to
recall those images either intentionally or accidentally and if they may be
subject to improper use or exposure? What if the machine needs service and
is taken to some other facility for that service? Who has access then?

Just some food for thought on a gloomy, looking like rain Thursday.
