A Perspective from an Educator and Practitioner
Teachers are like Janus, the ancient Roman god of transitions, looking to both the past and the future. In this keynote presentation, Mike Miller, who has taught graduate-level records management classes since the mid 1990s, will explore the impact of changing technology and business processes on how records management theory and practice are presented in graduate programs. The presentation will examine the relationships between some current records management practices and more traditional RIM thinking and evaluate the extent to which traditional ideas are paper-based rather than records-based.

Records Management:Nice to Know or Need to Know?
In many organizations, traditional approaches to RM training have been primarily based on leader-led,classroom based efforts. In the modern office, everyone is creating and managing records in multiple formats all the time, and records systems can be paper-based or digital. This session will answer the question of whether it might be better to provide training based on the point of need rather than assume users will retain information delivered in the classroom setting.

11:30 – 12:15- Robert Spangler, NARA
Moving the Needle
“Changing the mix of skills needed to deal with the shift of the US Government to an all-electronic records environment." NARA has an enormous role to play in dealing with e-records management, preservation and access across the Federal Government. What NARA works with are indeed "records," but they are also specific, highly technical, and often very complex entities known as computer files. This session will reveal the skill set needed to work with this content on a technical level, within an intellectual framework provided by archivists and records managers, which will be quite different as we move further into the 21st Century.

12:15 – 1:15Lunch (box lunch provided – Vendor Area)

1:15 – 2:30Presentations - Vendors/Practitioners

Joel Limerick, President,CEO, Document Systems, Inc. (DSI)
Collaboration, Interoperability, and RIM Compliance - Lessons Learned
Today’s records and information managers find themselves interacting with an increasingly interconnected and profoundly social user base. These interconnections are facilitated by devices which are persistently connected to global networks, enabling individuals to broadcast their likes, interests and insights. This presentation will demonstrate the power of the content management interoperability standards (CMIS) and CMIS clients such as IBM Connections to interconnect MS Office, email clients and content repositories such as SharePoint while enforcing RIM policies.

Anthony Lewandowski, Ph.D., Enterprise Solutions Architect, Project Performance Corporation (PPC)
The Evolution of Cloud as a Computing Platform: Options for the Enterprise
Starting with the invention of the hypervisor in the late 70’s and its commercialization beginning in the late 90’s, hardware virtualization seeks to abstract computing resources from the physical infrastructure and machines used to deliver those resources. Modern cloud computing platforms evolved from this concept, and have radically transformed the way we can deliver computing resources to the enterprise. Delivering on this abstraction, cloud platforms can offer customers the benefits of private/public cloud solutions including improved agility and responsiveness, reduced total cost of ownership, and increased business alignment and focus - all things that will increasingly impinge on records management and information governance. This presentation will review the current state of cloud computing, the major service offerings and what options organizations have to leverage this new capability.

Fred V. Diers, CRM, FAI,Vice President/General Manager of GRM Information Services (GRM)
Records Retention, Compliance, and Governance: Lessons of Experience
One finds through experience that returning to basic RIM methods can often be the solution to current challenges. This presentation will provide the following common sense techniques for individuals and organizations using social media and big data: identifying and communicating information risks; creating fact-based records retention schedules; identifying external and internal impacts causing process changes and compliance necessities; clarifying governance package scope; maintaining compliance with regulations; and implementing and assuring policy sustainability.

Tim Shinkle, Senior Director, Gimmal
Building on Success! SharePoint, Records Management, and the Cloud
Back in 2011, 78% of Fortune 500 companies were already SharePoint users, and according to Microsoft, 98% of the Federal Government now owns SharePoint. This platform has emerged as the choice environment for sharing, collaborating and managing unstructured content. Records Managers are wise to build on this success. One of the biggest challenges facing records managers has been end user adoption. SharePoint has broken through the user adoption problem by providing a robust web based collaborative portal that users want to use. This presentation discusses the impact of SharePoint on RM and where the Cloud might take it.

3:00 – 4:00Panel Discussion - student/practitioner/vendor
