Had an opportunity to watch this race over the weekend. The 72 foot boats are impressive, lifting out of the water and flying by at 40+mph. Truly a sight to see. So what does this have to do with Information management? As I thought about the coordination that must have to take place in order to get these boats going that speed a few things came to mind.
They must know something about:
Currents
Wind speed
Your role in the process
Wind direction
And a whole host of other data points that need to be gathered instantly.
Watching people run from one side to the other and start reeling in or out lines or hydrofoils one has to wonder, how is this data gathered, processed and decisions made on a split second basis?
Are there satellites at work? Are there support boats that feed the information?

So how can we as RIM professionals help our companies be as seamless as they appear to be? To me it boils down to process and knowing the direction of the information flow (wind, tide, ect.) and then doing something with that information. Managing information only takes us so far, but managing the information process takes us a lot farther.
Ciao.
