I was 57 when I certified as a CRM without any direct assistance from my employer. And, I have no regrets.
Most professions have some means for practitioners to demonstrate their experience and/or competence. For some it is academic degrees, for the military it is medals and ribbons, and others (such as accounting and records management) it is through certifications.
Earning the CRM may or may not make one more competent, but it brings a lot of credibility to the table.
