Ownership of digital property is not necessarily the same as it is with the
books you have on your shelves or the furniture in your home. Whenever you
sign up for a digital account, you're signing up to the terms and
conditions set down by that company, and not all of them let you pass files
on to someone else.

For a lot of digital content, buying something is only buying a license to
access it, so you can't necessarily bequeath all of your apps and music
after you've gone. Content you've created yourself (like photos and videos)
is a different matter, but add in the fact that most tech firm's data
servers are spread out all across the globe—with varying local laws and
legislation—and it's not an easy issue to unpack.

"The problems of our economy have occurred not as an outgrowth of
laissez-faire, unbridled competition.
They have occurred under the guidance of federal agencies, and under the
umbrella of federal regulations."
Senator Ted Kennedy, in defending trucking deregulation in 1978.
