Masters in Records Management with Specialism / Archives and Records Management

By online distance learning

Information management and recordkeeping has never been in greater demand from organisations. This programme will give you the expertise and knowledge required to benefit your employer through the effective management of records and information. It will also help mitigate the risks arising from mismanagement.

The Centre for Archive and Information Studies (CAIS) at the University of Dundee offers fully supported distance learning courses leading to a Masters degree in Records Management with Information Rights / Digital Preservation or to a degree in Archives and Records Management. The degrees are designed for anyone working or volunteering in a relevant professional environment. Each component course is written and tutored by expert practitioners and educators and examines recordkeeping theory and legislative imperatives and their practical application. Online discussion boards encourage the exchange of ideas and minimise the potential for isolation (often associated with traditional distance learning programmes).

All students are initially enrolled for the degree of MLitt/MSc (180 credits), but may exit with a Diploma (120 credits) or a Certificate (60 credits). The Masters degree comprises 180 credits consisting of 10 and 20 credit courses and a 60 credit dissertation. The Masters degree is normally completed in two and a half years. (Fast track options are available on request.)

Courses last for seven or thirteen weeks. Students are required to submit short assignments while studying and two final pieces of work in the two weeks following the end of each course. There are no examinations.

· 20 credit courses - 13 weeks

· 10 credit courses - 7 weeks

· 60 credit dissertation - 6-9 months

CAIS UK and International Masters students' feedback:

'Of the Masters courses available...these are the most diverse and interesting, and the most flexible.'

'CAIS has an excellent programme and it was a great experience.'

'I have enjoyed the course... it has been very worthwhile and I feel very fortunate to have been able to obtain employment as an archivist so quickly after qualifying'

'From all the chats I had with other UK MA students, I think you'd be pleased to hear that Dundee comes out extremely well (best in my humble opinion, but then I'm probably biased), both in terms of what's covered in the modules, but also in terms of the level of support and personal attention to students' individual needs/circumstances.'

'One thing that stood out for me was how well the distance learning course at Dundee has covered the varied aspects of appraisal both in theory and in the practical application.'

'Thanks for all your help and the help of the other tutors over the last three years. I was saying to my husband yesterday that I always felt like everyone was really invested in helping students succeed. I would certainly come back to Dundee for further training needs and I often recommend the course to our volunteers!'
