The county clerk’s office performs vital functions from tracking county
spending and processing purchase orders to keeping the official minutes of
county business meetings. But one of its most important tasks is
maintaining county records.

“We’re the historian of the county,” said Payne County Clerk Glenna Craig.

As the county clerk, Craig is responsible for preserving records extending
to the territorial period. Some of them, like land records, are available
online for public viewing, but many others are stored in cabinets or racks
on the unfinished third floor of the Payne County Administration Building.

"The problems of our economy have occurred not as an outgrowth of
laissez-faire, unbridled competition.
They have occurred under the guidance of federal agencies, and under the
umbrella of federal regulations."
Senator Ted Kennedy, in defending trucking deregulation in 1978.
