Laura,

If you can swing it, keep your back up tapes until superceded. With 28
years of backups I would recommend to spend some time with your lawyer.
Litigation might be a significant factor in disposing of these potential
records.

I seem to recall the rules of evidence allow a one time disposal to
bring your business into manageable operation. You might see if I
remember correctly. I urge you to be cautious. However, out of sight out
of mind. If your IT dude sends them to the storage abyss the issue will
never be resolved. Find out what you have, if you need to keep it, and
get rid of everything you can.

Caveat: this sounds like a great archival find for your org.
