Barbara S Weaver asked, "My manager seems to remember a "2-year rule" -- a
procedure that says documents not covered by a retention schedule must be
destroyed after 2 years. Does anyone have any input about such a rule or
do you have a policy in place that requires something similar? Thank you
for any information you can provide!"
Hi, Barbara,
American Honda Motor Company, Inc. instituted a 3 year rule as part of its
records management policy.
"POLICY STATEMENT:
A basic three-year retention cycle has been established for all record
series, unless otherwise specified in the Corporate Retention
Schedule, taking into account Federal, State, and other regulatory
statutes. It is anticipated that most operating units of the company
will find this retention period sufficient to meet their needs;
however, all retention periods are subject to reconsideration before
actual disposal occurs."
If you have a similar policy, find the documentation. If not, try to
get one implemented.
