Here in Oz a lot of RMers are, like me, ex librarians. I'm not actually
sure you CAN be an ex-librarian mind you, I've still got the uni
qualification though I've let my membership of the professional
association lapse. I drifted slowly from one to the other when
freelancing, because the market is bigger - not everyone has a library but
everyone has files. And it's more interesting.

The skill sets are very similar, especially if you focus on anything to do
with classification and indexing. Libraries buy things, RM doesn't.
Libraries have multiple copies of things, which in RM we'd prefer not to
happen. Libraries can (in most cases) fine users for overdue stuff, I've
not been game enough to try that in RM!

Otherwise, management is management, and anything IT will be useful, as
will any specialisation like law. Do you speak SQL? Here the RM software
vendors are always on the lookout for integrators.

I've had reason to prowl around the syllabuses of several Australian
library schools recently, and I'd have to say I came away fearing massive
boredom.

And finally, again here in Oz, compulsory employment after an
employer-funded course was defined in court I think around 1970 as a form
of indentured labour (synonym: slavery) and hence illegal.

These views are mine alone. They may or may not be those of any
previous or present employers or clients. I don't know. If I'd asked
and they'd agreed, I would have signed it "Harry Peck and Co and
Glenn". Or whatever. But I haven't, so I didn't.
