I have to confess that I am not a particular fan of .pdf or of any
"proprietary" storage format. Those storage formats that are owned by a
single vendor present Records and Information Managers with risks for
long-term storage. Although we now have a .pdf-a "standard", that is not a
fully recognized, non-proprietary standard.
As for long term storage of any digital form of a record, the format itself
is not the SOLE determining factor contributing to long-term useful life.
Those who take long-term storage seriously might be well advised to generate
a microfilm copy with a potential life expectancy of 500 years, or at
minimum, ensure that we have plans to migrate electronic records as the
media we use evolves.
