I have worked with some documents that were made on the early Xeroxes of
the late 1960's that were in terrible condition, mainly because of the
poor quality of paper (they had this really nasty acidic buffer on the
surface). Advances in technology have made modern copy paper to be of
better quality. I would give your paper somewhere in the neighborhood of
50 years before they would need excessive care.

Subject: How long will paper last?

Hi there,

I'm setting up my retention schedules and want to include provisions for
microfilming if necessary. For how many years can I expect regular,
recycled bond (and the ink/laser jet type on it) to last while boxed up?
By "to last", I mean that I want somebody to be able to open up the box
and handle the documents normally without excess care.

Thanks,
Shad Turner
