Steve,
These are things I'm investigating, so I don't have everything nailed down
yet. I'm particularly focusing on small and medium businesses. Here are
my thoughts. Backup procedures generally involve 2,3, or more media sets
which are rotated within the facility for some time, then rotated off
site. I definitely agree on the need for off site storage. (P.S. I
talked to someone at the GA Archives today. He said that they learned from
hurricane Katrina that the off site storage should be far far away.) I
haven't had a chance to check on the pricing and availability of off site
storage in my city, Atlanta. Also, I don't know how consistent the pricing
and availability of those services are from city to city. In many cases,
smaller businesses may just put tapes in a a storage cabinet at ambient
temperature and humidity on site. In some cases, they use a safe deposit
box for the off site requirement, which is also not climate
controlled. So, I was thinking it would be good to have a climate
controlled cabinet for the media which are on site. Also, if they had a
second facility, they could use facility 2 for off site storage for
facility 1 and vice versa. It may or may not be practical.
Sincerely,
Ron
