Thanks for the info Steve.
First of all, the company that does my destruction is in the US and is a
small local company. According to them, after shredding, they sell the
shred to paper mills where they can get the most money. Sometimes that
is Mexico. Also, according to them, it is not unusual for other
shredding companies to do the same (would any shredding companies like
to comment on this?).
As far as the 1/4" strip cut, I am at a Department of Energy facility.
The regulations that I have to follow require the 1/4" strip cut for the
types of documents that I have.

I have an entirely different take on this. First of all, why Mexico?
Why not chose a destruction company in the US that is AAA NAID certified
wwwq.naidonline.org and one that will use a recycler in the US?
And regarding strip size, before worrying about this, why not just
google the word DOCUMENT RECONSTRUCTION and see if strip size is really
of concern to you after looking at this. 5/8" is the NAID standard.
It is my opinion that you are flirting with disaster - a very dangerous
situation by sending your paper out of the country, where even if you do
have indemnification, you will be hard-pressed to file suit in the event
of a breach. International lawyers will have to be involved. Language
barriers, etc.
Personally, I would prefer to use only US destruction companies and US
paper mills.

*are the records already shredded before shipping to Mexico? If so what
volume are we talking about? What size shred 1/4, 1/8, 1/16 or crosscut?
you may want to schedule a visit to the Mexican recycler or seek an
indemnification from the US company that absolves your group. Reexamine
your
contract to see if it prevents such shipments.
finally would you have the same level of concern if the shipment was
made to
a US-based recycler? if not, why not
