I think that there are two scenarios for entry into our profession:
1) Transformation of an existing organization employee into a RIM
professional - I was one of these. I worked at a large aerospace
corporation, in a variety of financial and administrative roles, for
nearly 20 years before becoming the Records Manager. I think this is how
many of us ended up here. In this scenario, itıs often the employeeıs
broad understanding of the organizationıs operations that is the most
valuable. Once in the RIM role, this employee can bring their
organizational knowledge to the table, and has often already built
substantial trust and respect within the organization, all of which can be
brought into play when addressing issues and projects.
2) Hiring a RIM professional from outside the organization - This is where
I believe that degrees, certifications, certificates, etc., play a
significant role. Iıve been one of these, too. Itıs the primary reason
that I got my CRM. The alphabet soup after oneıs name is a way of
communicating our legitimacy to those who donıt know us.
