Hi Barb,

I'm sort of in the same boat - there's actually me and one other in my department (we should have a third but have been without one for quite awhile). Though we are each able to back the other up on daily activities, we have our own specific job duties and projects.

I think the preparation for the person after you comes down to documenting everything - not just the what but the why. We keep updated step by step instructions for all our processes, physical and digital (which if I ever get the time, will include screen shots for things done in our ECM); project plans and final reports; meeting notes; department contact lists; reports to be run, how, and where to save them in the ECM; spreadsheets and charts to use for forecasting, etc...

Most important I think though, is that for any change to existing processes or policies we document thoroughly why it was changed - what brought about the discussion to change it, all options put forth, and why we chose to go the way we did.

I came on board when the clean up from a previously inept RM department was well under way and the one question we asked ourselves on an almost daily basis was "Why the heck did they do this? It makes no sense to me."
