Colleagues, I need a labeling schema to identify 200-plus flat file cabinets that reside on floors in multiple buildings. I want to create labels that help staff identify which cabinet aisle to walk down to find or file engineering drawings in the correct drawer.
Factors to consider:
* cabinets are stacked 4 high
* each cabinet has 5 drawers
* each cabinet has been tagged with a 6-digit barcode that will be cross-referenced in a database to my new filing schema
* we may add additional cabinets/stacks in the future
* the primary location houses 3 rows of stacked cabinets separated by 2 aisles
I'm thinking of labeling each row A B C, each stack 1 -2 - 3..., each drawer 1-2-3-4-5.
So, for example, A1-2-5 would designate the first stack of cabinets, the 2nd cabinet from the top, the 5th drawer down.
I appreciate any tips. The reference books on filing systems I have consulted only discuss how to file contents of folders, not the cabinets themselves.
Thank you,
