Beth, your concept seems appropriate.  We have done similar mapping of cabinets and shelves.  I have two additional ideas.  First, Would it make sense to list the building first?  You mention several buildings.  So add Building XYZ to your location.  Also, do you have, or will you have at some time, multiple floors in a single building?  If so, I strongly suggest that as the secondary field information.  So now it becomes Building XYZ, Floor 4, A1-2-5 using your example.

We have also created maps of our spaces with a floorplan and the equipment displayed so anyone can enter the room and find the location on the map.  These are printed, put in plastic sleeves, and hung in as many places as is appropriate in each location.
