Which executive in an organization is in charge of deciding what
information it needs to keep and what it needs to destroy? One day soon,
Barclay T. Blair hopes the person who comes to mind will be the chief
information governance officer (CIGO). Blair is the founder and executive
director of the *Information Governance Initiative (IGI)*
<http://iginitiative.com/>, which hosted the first *CIGO Summit*
<http://cigosummit.com/> in Chicago from May 20 to 21. Representatives from
IG-related fields such as compliance, information security, data
governance, analytics, records management, e-discovery, and privacy
gathered to discuss how create a role for this new kind of information
leader.

"The problems of our economy have occurred not as an outgrowth of
laissez-faire, unbridled competition.
They have occurred under the guidance of federal agencies, and under the
umbrella of federal regulations."
Senator Ted Kennedy, in defending trucking deregulation in 1978.
