The ACA at UBC, the University of British Columbia Student Chapter of the
Association of Canadian Archivists, is delighted to invite you to its
eighth annual Seminar and Symposium, held on *February 10-12, 2016 *at the
University of British Columbia. The theme of this year’s event is “*Preserving
Liquid Communication,” *with a focus on the preservation of informal
communications generated in cloud environments through the use of social
media. Archivists, records managers, and other information professionals
will discuss the nature of social media output, the identification of what
should be preserved, methods of preservation and provision of access, and
legal issues related to intellectual rights, privacy, right to be
forgotten, and more. Speakers will discuss these matters informally with
attending professionals, students, and professors at the Seminar on
February 10 and 11 (10:00am-4:00pm). The Symposium, featuring formal
presentations from speakers, will be held on February 12 (9:00am-5:00pm).



The ACA at UBC is pleased to host eight experts, who will participate in
the Seminar and give the following presentations at the Symposium:

Media, and Recent Trends in Records Destruction”

·      *Greg Bak, University of Manitoba: *Constructing Ephemerality: The
Bitstream and the Cloud

·      *Babak Hamidzadeh*, *University of Maryland*: “What Can and Should
Be Preserved in Social Media Communications and How”

·      *Peter Meiszner and Houston White, UBC Public Affairs Office*:
Digital and Social Media at UBC Public Affairs

·      *Staff from Library and Archives Canada*: “Web Archiving and the
National Archival Collection: Capturing the Everyday Record”

·      *Erin O’Meara, Gates Archive*: “No More Waiting for Godot: Archival
Practice in the Age of Social Media and Hosted Platforms”

·      *Kate Theimer, ArchivesNext.com*: “Gaps in the Past and Gaps in the
Future: Archival Silences and Social Media”

registrants receive a reduced rate until January 15: professionals pay only
$35 to attend all events; students pay $10 (this includes lunch at the
Symposium). Professionals who sign up on January 16 or later pay $45, while
