Peter,

Interesting post, and philosophically I agree completely, especially as a medium for communication. However, even with the glaring issues inherent with this technology, there are major business based workflows and applications that will make it difficult to move away from it.

We process huge volumes of email submissions from all over the world 24/7/365 for kicking off our customers' Travel and process them and the attachments for input into their Expense Reports, Invoicing, and other workflow processes. It will take a herculean effort (not to mention cost) to migrate those processes to new technology. We have been trying for years to move customers off email onto web portals and other more secure and modern technology, but because the end users are literally spread all over the world and our customers have little control over the technology and environment of their end users, email still is THE major player. (Believe it or not we still receive unbelievable volumes of faxes on a daily basis and snail mail is still the second highest volume behind email).

I am sure things will start moving away from email (as it should); but then again, I have been hearing about the paperless office since I got into this profession in the 80s and I am still holding my breath.

Sincerely,

Curtis Welch
