RM ListServe;

I am preparing a presentation entitled "Professional Ethics: Outdated or Replaced?" for the Houston ARMA Chapter's Spring Conference next month, and would like to include some real world case studies regarding ethics-related issues or concerns that you've faced as a records manager. Have you ever been asked to do anything that was either downright unethical, or caused a great concern for you records management-wise?

For example, as a RIM supervisor a few years ago, I was asked by a manager in our Accounting department to "hide" some 20+ boxes of records he had that belonged to a 3rd party because they didn't want the auditors to see them. While this may not necessarily be unethical and even though I don't remember all of the particulars (like why we even had these boxes in the first place), there was something about his request that definitely made me very uneasy and I refused to do it. As a matter of fact I was more than a little disappointed that he even asked me to do something like that as if he knew I'd go along... and yes, "hide" was his word, not mine.

I'd love to be able to relay some of your own experiences to my session attendees and will be happy to give you credit (or keep you anonymous if you prefer). For that reason I'm asking that you respond directly to me offlist, and also so that none of the Houston folks on the List will get a heads up on my session!

Thanks.
Earl
