Congrats Ted on what I hope to be a great move. As an Ohio native (Toledo), and also as a former adjunct instructor who taught introductory and advance RM classes at Houston Community College and the Univ. of Akron's Comm Tech College (their RM program has since been discontinued), I am glad to hear about a major institution in the Buckeye state at least considering such a move. Like Jessie, I also like the applied sciences approach, and am disappointed that more schools aren't considering similar programs. I still don't quite understand why MBA schools don't require at least basic RIM classes as part of their programs.

While I am not as up on this as I used to be, I know that the Univ. of North Dakota has an undergrad RIM degree program (but it may've been discontinued when Dr. Langemo retired), and I think that at one point Central Michigan Univ. also had an undergrad RIM degree program. At the community college level, Houston Community College and North Harris Community College (also in/near Houston) had Associate degree programs with a RIM focus. I may be dating myself here as all of these schools may no longer be offering their programs, as attitudes towards RIM curriculums have changed considerably over the last ten years or so.

In any case, I think there's a definite need for such a program and hope that your exploration committee will see the same. Of course, as your may already know there are several grad level programs in RM and archives, including a very good one at the Univ. of Michigan (as a Buckeye it pains me to say that).

Good luck!
Earl

Hello,

I am the librarian for a College of Applied Science at University of
Cincinnati. I am serving on a committee that is exploring the creation of a
bachelor's degree related to records management or archives/archival
technology. We may also be interested in developing a certificate program,
as a start. This program would be in an applied science context, so there
would likely be an enphasis on hands-on experience and application.

Does anyone know of a current undergraduate program in the US that has this
type of subject focus? Could anyone weigh in on the potential usefulness of
this degree in the marketplace? I have tried some searches for studies on
undergrad education in this area, but have found very little.

The fields of records management and archives are a bit new to me, so I
truly appreciate your assistance!

-- Ted
