April 2005 Chapter Meeting

Puget Sound Chapter of ARMA International

Wednesday, April 13, 2005

La Quinta Inn, Tacoma, Washington

What a Disaster!

Program: We use the words lightly, but think for a moment and ask yourself
if you're ready when a disaster strikes. Do you know what to save; what to
leave behind? Can you get your business started up again immediately and
smoothly with all the documentation you need? Are you prepared to work with
no power? Can you salvage damaged documents? What if you have to relocate?

These are just a few of the questions that arise when we think about
Disaster Preparedness and Recovery. Of course, there's an entire industry
built around this topic, but what about the records? They often get only
cursory attention, but are the foundation for rebuilding after - and during
- a disaster. Come hear Leslie Malek speak about vital records programs,
prioritization of salvage efforts, basic techniques for salvage and
recovery, and more.

Speaker: LESLIE MALEK is a native of Seattle. She obtained a Bachelor of
Music at Pacific Lutheran University and has a Master of Music from the
University of Washington. She has had 27 years experience with Government
records.

Ms. Malek is a Senior Records Analyst, for the National Archives and Records
Administration (NARA) 2003-Present. She provides assistance, advice, and
guidance to Federal agencies on their agency records programs. She teaches a
variety of courses to educate Federal employees on management of
records/records systems. She participates on national NARA teams to improve
records management practices throughout Federal government. Previous to her
employment with NARA, Ms. Malek was the Records Officer, Seattle District US
Army Corps of Engineers 1986-2001. She has received numerous Government
awards and medals throughout her career. She is a long-time member of ARMA.
Her personal interests include:  Time with husband and family;
singing/music, literature, and fine arts; hiking and camping; history;
spiritual communities; entertaining.
