Position Opening: Curator of Government Records

Nebraska State Historical Society, Lincoln, NE

Position #: 054-00403-1; Agency #54; Class Code: V393720; Grade Code: 013   

Regular full-time    

Salary (monthly): $2,740- $3,973 (depending on qualifications)

 

Description of Essential Duties:  

As administrator of the government records program, plans, coordinates, and directs the operations of the State Archives.  Develops policies, practices, and standards relating to the scheduling and retention or disposal of records.  Works with government agencies to implement records schedules.  Works with other Agency curators on management of cross-format materials from public sources.  Identifies, appraises, and produces finding aids for records of enduring historical value.  Develops policies for electronic records and their management, storage, and retrieval.  Provides reference services and public outreach as needed.  Initiates and/or participates in Division and Agency projects as needed.  Supervises one assistant curator and volunteers, work/study students, and interns as available.  Serves as Deputy Coordinator of the State Historical Records Advisory Board (SHRAB). Must pass background checks.  May have occasional overnight stays and traveling. 

 

Schedule to be worked: 

Generally Monday through Friday 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM; some Saturdays as assigned.          

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Requirements:

Post-bachelor's coursework/training in Archives Administration, Records Management, Library Science, History, or Museum Studies. Master's degree preferred;  

Knowledge of professional practices governing the definition, retention, and disposition of government records;

Knowledge of records management and archival preservation principles and methodologies;

Knowledge of current information technologies and trends and the collection, retrieval, and preservation of same;

Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with staff, elected officials, agency records managers, and the public;

Ability to analyze, arrange, and describe government records collections;

Ability to creatively use automation technologies in the performance of the job;

Ability to operate State motor vehicles or provide independent transportation;

Ability to lift and carry up to 65 pounds;

Knowledge of database management systems such as Microsoft Access.
