In 1994-95, an ad hoc committee of ARMA's Board of Directors was
tasked with looking into a name change for ARMA International. The
chapters were asked to explore this idea with members and make
suggestions. The committee, which I chaired, found that there were
three options: leave everything the way it was, change the name,
keep the name but add a tag line. The membership consensus was to
keep everything the way it was *or* add a tag line. (The chair
preferred a name change.)

The name change option was in the minority, and so the BOD decided to
keep "ARMA International" but add a tag line: "The Information
Management Professionals." "ARMA International" would be kept (many
older members wanted at least the initials kept). "ARMA
International" would normally not be spelled out or otherwise used in
its fullest expression.

This is somewhat like the Special Libraries Association, which, after
a major branding study, took a name-change vote, and the members
decided to keep "SLA." But because SLA is about more than
"libraries," "SLA" would typically not be spelled out, and the tag
line chosen is "Connecting People and Information." <http://www.sla.org/>

All I'm pointing out here is a historical note of explanation. A lot
has happened within ARMA International since 1995.

Best,
Mike
