Good points, Bill. We probably all have the feeling sometimes that if
only we were somewhere else, life would be simpler. The grass is always
greener...

The uniqueness of practices from firm to firm unfortunately is due in
good part to the fact that other industries have done a better job of
formulating and adopting best practices.

For me, two things a rookie law firm records manager needs to be ready
for:

1. Answering to the normal hierarchy of bosses--along with all of the
partner attorneys who each consider themselves our boss.

2. What Julie described as "navigating the very murky waters of client
file ownership" is our industry's self-imposed concept that, although
our lawyers create the records, our clients own them. Makes records
retention policies a real adventure.
